Decorating cupcakes with Wilton

Weston, my younger son, has been asking to decorate cupcakes for months. Tonight, thanks to Wilton and the goodies they gave us to play with at Camp Blogaway this past weekend, we decorated.

Wilton was one of the fantastic sponsors at Camp Blogaway, a weekend retreat for food bloggers run by the inimitable Patti Londre (www.worththewhisk.com). Even after two workshops where we decorated cupcakes, brownies and cookies, there were leftovers: dozens of bags of colored icing, gorgeous icing roses and daisies, sprinkles and pearls and sparkly colored sugar. Nancy and Gretchen, the Wilton ladies, didn't want to ship them back to Illinois. So I gratefully took whatever would fit in my car and brought it home to the kids.

And here's what we did tonight:

Those are great looking treats, how lucky they are to have a fun loving Mom. I'm enjoying reading about the camp from all you guys.

Oh Greg, I don't know about that - your "rainbow spider" cupcake was pretty darn fantastic.

Cathy, Camp Blogaway is a MUST for next year!

I see that Wilton has a "Kosher" food coloring set that comes up in a natural food colors search but it's not clear whether they come from plant origins vs chemical. Any idea if that Kosher set is nature-based? Lots of folks have sensitivity to synthetic food coloring and we try not to use it.

Love your cupcakes!! Fun to do with the kids

Robyn - I looked on the Wilton site and can't tell whether the colors are natural or synthetic. I've asked Wilton to jump in here - either they'll respond directly or I'll let you know what they tell me. Great question, thanks for asking.

What a fun mom! See those hands-on demos were worth doing weren't they ;-) Looks like your boys had lots of fun, and I'm sure they were happy to have you back home.

@Mac - what was amazing, actually, was how quickly both boys picked up the star and shell piping techniques. Theirs were better than mine!

The Nuni has been ALL over the cake catalog from the goodie bag -- it's her new favorite "book"
